Max is a visual programming language that connects sound, visuals and more media. Based on a concept similar to modular synthesizers Max is easy to learn and fast to work with.
Max For Live brings the power of Max to Ableton Live and hugely extends Live’s possibilities with additional instruments, audio effects, modulators and much more. In our course we keep the theory to a minimum and quickly start building Max For Live devices. At the end of the workshop the participants will have working devices for further use/development/learning to take home.
On Friday we introduce the concept, basic principles, important elements, and conventions of Max. We will show what is possible with it and how to achieve it. Then we start with our first device: a melodic MIDI Step Sequencer. Building a MIDI Device is an efficient and motivating way to get into Max while creating something musically useful.
On Saturday we will complete our MIDI Sequencer while learning more programming techniques and tricks. Then we start building a basic, monophonic instrument (synth or sampler).
On Sunday we finish our instrument. Finally we look into the infamous LOM – the Live Object Model. By understanding the LOM you are able to take over control of Ableton Live in unique ways which are impossible with any other DAW .
We will then discuss various topics relevant to musicians who want to build their own instruments and effects like different kinds of “musically useful randomness”, how to implement probability, and topics suggested by the course participants.

About the instructor: Peter Votava has been using and teaching Max for over 20 years and Live for over 10 years. As well as being an experienced instructor, he is active as producer, live performer and dj in various fields since 1991 with his projects Pure, Current 909, Ilsa Gold and many more. He has over 30 physical releases on labels like aufnahme+wiedergabe, Holotone, Monolith, Stirpe999, Editions Mego and more. He lives in Berlin and Vienna.

* Your own computer (Win or OSX) with either an authorized copy of Max 8/Live 10 or a trial version. The trail is fully functional for 30 days. * No prior knowledge of Max is needed. A certain familiarity with Live would be helpful (except you are working with Max only)
